4/17/2014 - Uncooperative Weather Day - Queenstown to Auckland

There was snow on the mountains at Queenstown first thing in the morning. Good thing we're off to the warmer north Island.

Our 7:45 am departure was delayed to 11:45 and the destination was changed from Rotorua/Te Puia/Dairy Farm to Auckland. We missed the Te Puia Maori Cultural Center and Thermal Reserve where we were to learn more about the history and culture of Maori and see the geyser basin. In addition we missed Longland's Dairy Farm. New Zealand is the world's eighth largest milk producer, with about 2.2% of world production, and growing. Most of the industry is organized into cooperatives, the largest being Frontera. There are a few controversies in this industry: increasing emissions with conversions of sheep ranches to dairy farms, Chinese purchase of major holdings and clean water scarcity.

Our resourceful tour guide was able to arrange for a private Maori Cultural Show at the Auckland Museum so at least we were able to experience this enlightening presentation. (This may have been held on 4/18 but we needed something on this page!)

Following the show, a few of the participants posed for photos.

Maori were violent fighters and the traditional poses include scary facial expressions and hand/leg movements
